Asbestos is currently responsible for over 3,000 deaths each year in the UK, and recent predictions for the future show that these are likely to rise to 10,000 by the year 2025.
Asbestos has for some time had a high profile in occupational health and safety, and recent changes in the legislation have turned the spotlight once more onto what is the single biggest occupational killer in the UK.
The Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations have been broadened to cover all work which is liable to disturb asbestos materials, and the requirements in these and other asbestos regulations have been tightened considerably by the recent changes. Further changes are, however, expected that will place duties upon persons responsible for workplace buildings to manage asbestos in buildings.
