The problem
One of the requirements of the COSHH Regulations (Regulation 10) is to carry out monitoring of the workplace to establish exposures of employees to hazardous substances. Workplace monitoring has to be carried out by a “competent person” to established and accredited protocols.
Monitoring is required:-
- To establish whether a problem exists
- Following changes in work practices, introduction of new processes etc
- Where necessary to ensure that existing controls are adequate to control exposure
- To assess the effectiveness of or specify respiratory protective equipment
- To provide evidence that adequate control is being achieved and maintained
The solution
EEF Sheffield Association can offer a comprehensive atmospheric monitoring service carried out by qualified occupational hygienists using calibrated equipment, with samples analysed by UKAS accredited laboratories. Typical workplace monitoring surveys include:-
- Total inhalable and respirable dust, including further analysis for such as respirable silica, toxic metals etc as appropriate from any work emitting dust
- Metal fume (welding, casting etc)
- Solvent vapours from painting, GRP, degreasing etc
- Acid mists from metal finishing operations
- Metal working fluid mists
The Association is also able to offer regular thorough examinations of local exhaust ventilation systems as required by Regulation 9.
