COSHH Assessment and Monitoring

COSHH (CONTROL OF SUBSTANCES HAZARDOUS TO HEALTH) ASSESSMENT

The problem

The COSHH Regulations have been in place for around 14 years, with many alterations over that time, the latest in 2003 alongside the annual revision of the occupational exposure limits published by HSE.

The Regulations require employers to assess the risk to health of their employees arising from exposure to substances hazardous to health. (See also Workplace Air Monitoring).

While most employers have made some effort to compile COSHH assessments, the standard of assessment may not be sufficient. It is also a job which gives real problems for many managers responsible for health and safety who simply do not have the time or opportunity to develop the level of understanding or skills necessary to do the job properly.

Occupational ill health arising from exposure to hazardous substances can take many years to become apparent, so an assessment completed today may be scrutinized in court in 20-30 years time, it is therefore vital that the assessments are produced to the required standard.

The solution

EEF Sheffield Association can offer assistance to hard pressed employers by:-

- Training and assisting managers and supervisors to carry out in house assessments
- Carrying out assessments on behalf of employers, leaving a set of assessments which can be readily updated “in house” in future years as and when things change.
- Reviewing and updating existing assessments in line with the latest legislation.
